Success Stories
Research and innovation are key to improving our transportation system and solving common transportation problems. The Transportation Pooled Fund
(TPF) Program provides an opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders around the world to help solve transportation problems. By pooling funds and
expertise, agencies can develop innovative solutions at a much lower cost than conducting the research alone. Our partners have had a lot of success and
value with the TPF program! Please see some success stories below.
Look back at the past year of successes achieved through the TPF program!
Michigan DOT Research: Innovation through partnerships
Multi-state transportation research yields big benefits for Michigan.
Multi-state research through the national Transportation Pooled Fund (TPF) Program has always been a significant value for MDOT. By pooling funds with other states, MDOT is able to solve shared problems at a fraction of the cost of going it alone. But the benefits of participating in pooled fund studies go far beyond cost savings.

Iowa DOT: Research Solutions
lowa leverages resources to maximize research impact.
ith hundreds of active pooled funds, the TPF Program regulates the process of helping state DOTs find and fund projects. It also provides the framework for a successful multiagency partnership, outlining the various roles and responsibilities needed. A TPF study operates like a committee, with each member.

Evaluation of low-cost safety improvements
The FHWA-led TPF study ELCSI, actively leverages partnerships to develop low-cost, feasible countermeasures that reduce safety risks.
Safety is a top priority of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).
In 2020, even though the volume of traffic was down overall, 38,824 people still died in motor vehicle crashes,
and an estimated 2.28 million were injured.1 To reach the USDOT’s safety goals,
the transportation sector needs to work together to identify and implement safety solutions.

TPF study seeks to mitigate wildlife-vehicle collisions and improve driver safety
Nevada-led TPF study seeks to find ways to improve habitats connectivity for local wildlife.
Through the process of surveying transportation
agencies across the United States and Canada,
several themes were identified and used to
formulate recommendations. The TPF study’s
manual includes case studies for practitioners
that illustrate how the guidelines can be
implemented and three main recommendations.

Leverage funds through the TPF Program
One of the greatest benefits of the TPF program is the ability to leverage limited funds and increase a partners ability to participate in large-scale research efforts that otherwise would not be feasible. This report shows the estimated funds received in return for every $1 contributed to the TPF program. (Note this is for FY 2022 and is an estimate based on the contributions added to the TPF website).
